Small Inn / Bed and Breakfast Publications
Drew Dimond and smallinn-cubator© have been publishing books about the bed and breakfast and small inn business since 1990. When the first book was published "How to Open and Operate A Successful Bed & Breakfast Business" (currently out of print) the popularity of B&Bs was starting to grow, and the B&B industry in the United States was just emerging.
Drew says, “When I started to write an expanded second edition of my first book it became abundantly clear that there was nothing available to assist a new inn operator who was in the early planning stages—considering a purchase or development of a small inn or B&B. There were no books dealing with how to perform a market and feasibility study, how to write a business plan, or how to put together a loan submission package.”
At the same time a fortuitous situation surfaced. Guests who discovered the small inn or B&B while on holiday or vacation desperately wanted that same experience when traveling on business. Few inns and B&B’s were prepared to include the business traveler among their guests. They just did not have the amenities, services, and facilities the business traveler demanded.
With a newly found appreciation of the small inn operator and 20 years of hospitality operations, marketing, and development experience, Drew went about a research and fact finding mission. He confirmed that the large cookie cutter hotel brands can’t deliver the type of hands-on service that small inns and B&B’s are noted for. If a small inn or B&B were located near a business traveler’s destination, had the necessary amenities, and utilized the internet properly it could capture more than its share of the market.
The fruits of Drew’s labors resulted in expanding his hospitality consulting firm to include small inns and B&B’s and authoring several books dealing with the early stages of planning. Most of the material in these publications are as a result of hands-on consulting engagements or actual operations in his own hospitality facilities. The books include:
